Maha Shivaratri

महाशिवरात्रि

The night Shiva is dressed as a gopi to watch Krishna's Raas Leela.

Why it matters

Honours Lord Shiva, worshipped in Vrindavan uniquely as Gopeshwar Mahadev — Shiva in the form of a gopi.

The story

Vrindavan tells Shivaratri unlike anywhere else. At the historic Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple, the Shiva Lingam is dressed every evening in feminine gopi attire — a saree, bangles and a nose ring — to commemorate the legend that Shiva took the form of a gopi so he could enter the circle of Krishna's cosmic Raas Leela dance. Devotees keep a night-long vigil with bilva leaves, milk abhishek and chants of 'Har Har Mahadev'.

Quick facts

  • 1Gopeshwar Mahadev is the only Shiva temple where the Lingam wears a saree.
